Why study it:

International Master of Horticultural Science is a joint international programme of the University of Agriculture in Krakow (URK) – its Faculty of Biotechnology and Horticulture – together with the Faculty of Horticulture in Lednice of Mendel University in Brno and the Faculty of Horticulture and Landscape Engineering of the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra. These full-time, general academic studies last 4 semesters and end with the title of Master of Science in Engineering; they suit those who want to work in modern horticultural production and in the horticultural sector at the European level.

Programme: fruit growing, crop protection and post-harvest technology

Compulsory courses include, among others:

  • stone fruit production, special fruit growing and pruning and training of fruit trees
  • integrated system of fruit production and integrated protection of horticultural crops
  • fruit storage and post-harvest technology of horticultural crops
  • plant molecular genetics and genomics, applied plant biotechnology, biostatistics
  • rural cultural tourism

Specialisation: your own profile within horticulture

During the studies you can reach a certain level of specialisation by combining obligatory and voluntary courses, selected with regard to current trends in modern European horticultural production. The programme covers the horticultural industry in its full scope – fruit growing, vegetable growing, ornamental plants and plant improvement.

The knowledge and skills gained allow graduates to obtain professional qualifications needed to work as a horticulturist, plant breeder or green area designer.

After graduation: farms, phytosanitary services and research

Graduates can run their own horticultural farm with conventional, integrated or organic methods, or work:

  • in specialised horticultural farms and fruit and vegetable processing
  • in horticultural advisory services, administration and institutions caring for green areas
  • in phytosanitary services and bodies certifying integrated production farms
  • in research institutes, R and D centres and education

⇑Definitions and quotes

International
International mostly means something (a company, language, or organization) involving more than a single country. The term international as a word means involvement of, interaction between or encompassing more than one nation, or generally beyond national boundaries. For example, international law, which is applied by more than one country and usually everywhere on Earth, and international language which is a language spoken by residents of more than one country.
Science
Science (from Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge") is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe.
Science
We’ve arranged a global civilization in which most critical elements profoundly depend on science and technology. We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces.
Sir Ernest Rutherford from The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (1996), 26.
Science
The men in the laboratory... cannot be said to observe the actual objects of their curiosity at all. ...The sense data on which the propositions of modern science rest are, for the most part, little photographic spots and blurs, or inky curved lines on paper. ... What is directly observable is only a sign of the "physical fact"; it requires interpretation to yield scientific propositions.
Susanne Langer, Philosophy in a New Key (1942)
Science
Within the short span of a human life and with man's limited powers of memory, any stock of knowledge worthy of the name is unattainable except by the greatest mental economy. Science itself, therefore, may be regarded as a minimal problem, consisting of the completest possible presentment of facts with the least possible expenditure of thought.
Ernst Mach, The Science of Mechanics: A Critical and Historical Account of Its Development (1893) p. 490, Tr. Thomas J. McCormack.
